Portfolio Overview
The Consumer Brands Portfolio, a thematic collection of global consumer compounders, delivered mixed results this week. Strong gains in Zalando (+24.4%), Shiseido (+24.2%), and L’Occitane (+14.7%) were offset by declines in LVMH (-8.3%) and Moncler (-7.2%). The portfolio remains focused on high-quality brands with durable competitive advantages.
Top Performers
- Zalando SE (ZLDSF): +24.41% – Benefiting from strong European e-commerce trends and operational improvements.
- Shiseido Company (SSDOY): +24.20% – Driven by recovery in Japanese tourism and premium skincare demand.
- L’Occitane International (LOGI): +14.70% – Solid execution in Asia and expanding margins.
Underperformers
- LVMH (LVMHF): -8.28% – Luxury sector headwinds from slowing Chinese demand and margin pressure.
- Moncler (MONRF): -7.22% – Persistent weakness in luxury outerwear amid cautious consumer spending.
Portfolio Actions
We have decided to close two positions:
- Moncler S.p.A. (MONRF): Closed due to persistent underperformance and weak luxury demand signals, especially in Asia. The thesis of resilient luxury spending has not materialized.
- LVMH (LVMHF): Closed due to deteriorating fundamentals in the luxury sector, including slowing Chinese demand and margin compression. The risk-reward is no longer favorable.
All other positions are maintained. The portfolio remains well-diversified across geographies and sub-sectors, with a bias toward companies with strong brand equity and pricing power.
Risk Concentration
The portfolio has moderate exposure to luxury goods (now reduced) and e-commerce. No single position exceeds 8% of the portfolio. Currency risk is managed through global diversification.
What to Watch
- Consumer spending trends in China and Europe.
- Earnings reports from key holdings like Estée Lauder and Lululemon.
- Inflation and interest rate impacts on discretionary spending.
