Copper Portfolio Weekly Review: Strong Gains, One Position Closed

Review Date: August 7, 2026

The Copper Portfolio delivered a strong week, buoyed by rising copper prices and continued global demand for electrification. The portfolio’s diversified exposure across geographies and stages of the copper value chain has paid off, with most positions posting gains.

Performance Highlights

  • Ero Copper (ERO) led the way with a +34.0% return, reflecting strong operational performance and favorable copper prices.
  • Filo Corp (WPM) gained +24.5%, benefiting from exploration success and sector momentum.
  • Atalaya Mining (B) rose +21.5%, supported by solid production and cost management.
  • Capstone Copper (CSCCF) and Hudbay Minerals (HBM) also posted gains of +20.4% and +21.4%, respectively.

On the downside, JX Advanced Metals (JXADF) suffered a severe decline of -66.3%, which we believe reflects a fundamental break in the investment thesis. As a result, we have closed this position to reallocate capital to more promising opportunities within the copper space.

Portfolio Positioning

The portfolio remains well-diversified across major copper producers, developers, and explorers globally. Key holdings include Freeport-McMoRan, Southern Copper, and Teck Resources, all of which are benefiting from the structural demand driven by electrification and renewable energy infrastructure.

We continue to favor companies with low-cost operations, strong balance sheets, and direct exposure to copper price upside. The recent pullback in some junior miners offers selective entry points, but we remain disciplined in our stock selection.

What to Watch

  • Copper prices: Watch for supply disruptions in major producing regions (Chile, Peru) and demand signals from China’s stimulus measures.
  • Earnings season: Upcoming quarterly reports from key holdings will provide clarity on production guidance and cost trends.
  • Macro factors: Interest rate decisions and global growth outlook will influence copper demand and investor sentiment.

Risk Considerations

The portfolio carries concentration risk in the copper sector, which is cyclical and sensitive to global economic conditions. Geopolitical risks in mining jurisdictions and currency fluctuations can also impact returns. Investors should be prepared for volatility.
