Defense Technology Portfolio Weekly Review: Drones, Subsea Systems and Mission-Critical Defense Exposure

Review date: June 17, 2026

The Defense Technology Portfolio remains a young, concentrated thematic portfolio built around three global defense-technology opportunities: Kraken Robotics Inc. (KRKNF), QinetiQ Group plc (QNTQF), and AeroVironment, Inc. (AVAV). The portfolio is not designed to mirror a broad aerospace and defense index. Instead, it targets areas where military modernization is increasingly technology-led: autonomous systems, subsea sensing, mine countermeasures, counter-drone systems, mission software, testing, training, and advanced engineering.

The backdrop remains supportive for the theme. SIPRI reported that global military expenditure reached $2.887 trillion in 2025, up 2.9% in real terms from 2024, while NATO has also formalized a longer-term commitment for allies to invest up to 5% of GDP annually in core defense and defense/security-related spending by 2035. That does not guarantee smooth stock performance, but it reinforces the multi-year demand case for specialized defense technology suppliers. Current Portfolio Snapshot

Company Ticker Pick Date Latest Stored Return Status
Kraken Robotics Inc. KRKNF 2026-06-07 -7.56% Hold
QinetiQ Group plc QNTQF 2026-06-07 0.00% Hold
AeroVironment, Inc. AVAV 2026-06-14 -2.27% Hold

On a simple equal-weighted basis, the three open positions show an approximate average stored return of -3.28%. That early drawdown is not yet a portfolio-level concern. All three holdings are recent additions and are still inside the minimum holding-period protection window, so the bar for closing a position is deliberately high.

Position Review

Kraken Robotics Inc. (KRKNF): Subsea Defense and Maritime Autonomy

Kraken Robotics is the portfolio’s highest-volatility position and currently the largest detractor, with a stored return of -7.56%. The short-term price move should be treated as normal early-stage volatility rather than a thesis failure. Kraken remains closely aligned with the defense technology theme through synthetic aperture sonar, subsea batteries, unmanned underwater vehicle support, mine countermeasure applications, and critical underwater infrastructure monitoring.

The company’s recent update showed Q1 2026 revenue growth of 35% year over year, reiterated 2026 guidance, and highlighted continued order momentum across SeaPower batteries and synthetic aperture sonar. Management also said 2026 announced Kraken orders had reached approximately $97 million, with Covelya order intake also progressing, while guidance called for 2026 revenue of $165 million to $175 million before any Covelya contribution. ([nasdaq.com](https://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/kraken-robotics-reports-q1-2026-financial-results-35-year-over-year-revenue-growth))

The key watch item is execution around the Covelya acquisition. If the deal closes and integration proceeds well, Kraken could become a more diversified supplier of dual-use subsea technology. If integration costs rise, approvals slip, or margins disappoint, the position may need a deeper review. For now, the investment case remains intact.

QinetiQ Group plc (QNTQF): Defense Engineering, Test and Mission Support

QinetiQ provides the portfolio with a more mature, cash-generative defense technology exposure. Its role is different from Kraken and AeroVironment: instead of being primarily a pure-play drone or subsea hardware story, QinetiQ adds exposure to defense testing, training, engineering services, mission support, directed energy, and long-duration government programs.

QinetiQ’s FY26 results showed record order intake, a £4.8 billion backlog, underlying operating profit growth of 18% to £218 million, margin expansion to 11.3%, and a 24% dividend increase. Management also pointed to FY27 revenue growth of 3% to 5% and operating margin of 11.0% to 11.5%. ([qinetiq.com](https://www.qinetiq.com/pl-pl/news/fy26-group-performance?utm_source=openai))

The main issue to monitor is QinetiQ’s U.S. business, where management has said strategic fit is under review and that all options remain active. This is not automatically negative: a restructuring, sale, partnership, or refocus could unlock value. But it does mean the stock may be sensitive to capital-allocation news and investor interpretation of the U.S. opportunity.

AeroVironment, Inc. (AVAV): Drones, Counter-UAS and Defense Autonomy

AeroVironment is the portfolio’s newest position and gives the strategy direct exposure to unmanned aerial systems, loitering munitions, counter-drone capabilities, directed energy, autonomy software, and the broader shift toward distributed battlefield systems. The stored return of -2.27% is not material enough to affect the thesis.

Recent company news flow remains active. AeroVironment announced plans to report fiscal Q4 and full-year 2026 results after market close on June 29, 2026. Its investor news feed also shows recent developments including a backpackable uncrewed ground vehicle, a Taiwan UAS-related MOU, production expansion in the Dayton area, a $20 million Air Force and Space Force research contract, expansion of the Huntsville facility for the Freedom Eagle-1 interceptor, and a $43 million contract connected to PANTHER phased-array telemetry integration. There are also real risks. In fiscal Q3 2026, AeroVironment reported strong demand indicators, including $2.1 billion of bookings for the first nine months and $1.1 billion of funded backlog, but the quarter also included a $151.3 million goodwill impairment in the Space reporting unit tied to a stop-work order on the BADGER phased-array antenna program. That combination makes AVAV a high-upside but high-scrutiny holding heading into its upcoming results. Risk Concentration

This portfolio is intentionally concentrated, but the risk profile is balanced across different parts of the defense-technology stack:

  • Autonomous and unmanned systems: AVAV provides the clearest exposure to drones, loitering munitions, counter-UAS and battlefield autonomy.
  • Subsea and maritime security: KRKNF targets underwater sensing, batteries, mine countermeasures and critical infrastructure monitoring.
  • Mission-critical engineering and test infrastructure: QNTQF adds a more established defense-services and engineering base.

The main concentration risk is that all three holdings are tied to defense budgets and procurement cycles. Even when geopolitical demand is strong, contract timing, budget negotiations, export approvals, program delays, and shifting government priorities can create sharp share-price volatility. The second risk is valuation: defense-tech stocks can re-rate quickly when investors crowd into the theme, so strong operating results must eventually support the market’s expectations.

What to Watch Next

  • AeroVironment earnings on June 29, 2026: Watch funded backlog, guidance, BlueHalo integration, margin progression, and commentary on space, cyber, directed energy and counter-drone programs.
  • Kraken Robotics acquisition execution: Monitor the Covelya closing timeline, post-close guidance, order conversion, working capital, and any signs of integration strain.
  • QinetiQ capital allocation: Watch for updates on the U.S. business strategic review, buyback execution, FY27 margin guidance, and backlog conversion.
  • Defense-budget signals: NATO spending plans, U.S. procurement priorities, European rearmament, Indo-Pacific maritime security, and counter-drone procurement remain important macro drivers.
  • Liquidity and position sizing: KRKNF and QNTQF may have different trading characteristics for U.S.-based investors than large-cap U.S. defense names, so execution quality and liquidity should be monitored.

Portfolio Decision: No Closures This Week

No open position should be closed this week. Kraken Robotics, QinetiQ and AeroVironment are all recent additions and remain within the protected minimum holding period. More importantly, none has shown a thesis break, catalyst failure, severe fundamental deterioration, poor thematic fit, or excessive portfolio concentration that would justify overriding the hold discipline.

The correct action is to continue holding, monitor near-term catalysts, and avoid overreacting to early price noise. The portfolio is still in its build-out phase, and the current drawdown is acceptable for a concentrated thematic strategy focused on defense technology innovation.
